“The good seaman weathers the storm he cannot avoid, and avoids the storm he cannot weather.”

One of the most important aspects of being a well-rounded sailor is observing everything around you, from the water to the wind to the weather. Sailors even have proverbs to help them remember cloud shapes and colors that may tell of impending ominous weather, such as "Mares' tails and mackerel scales make lofty ships to carry low sails." and "Red sky at night sailors delight, red sky in the morning sailors take warning." Weather affects everything you do as a sailor, from how you rig your sail to where you can sail too.

This course covers all aspects of practical marine weather, starting from the basics and ending with all you need to plan your voyages—or weekend outings—safely and efficiently, considering the weather. Our Marine Weather Course is a practical course that will inform your decision-making when planning and underway, racing, or cruising. The course will focus on the route from Newport, RI, to Bermuda for those participating in the 2022 Newport Bermuda Race.

Throughout the course, the class will access live weather data through custom Internet links to illustrate many of the topics it covers. You will also monitor a hypothetical coastal or ocean passage at the time of the course to see how the real world evolved and what decisions might be best at the time.

This course includes a textbook, access to online digital tools and resources, and four exclusive live presentations from Starpath School of Navigation instructors, presented in a classroom format at The WaterFront Center with a remote access option via Zoom for those unable to attend in-person.

Course Fee is $350+tax for a printed textbook, total enrollment in the Starpath Online Marine Weather Course, and four exclusive live video supplemental presentations (with remote zoom access option) from Starpath instructors on Wednesday evenings (7 pm-9 pm) at The WaterFront Center to answer questions and demonstrate methods. Optional certification test available.

Once you complete your course you can visit our Tempest Weather Page to check the real time weather next time you are planning a sailing trip at The WaterFront Center!

Located in Seattle, Starpath School of Navigation offers online training in all areas of marine navigation and related subjects and produces navigation software and books (Starpath Publications). The school had hosted more than 26,000 students in their classrooms before switching to online training. Instructors are practicing navigators with years of teaching experience and thousands of miles of sea time. Most sailors in the Pacific Northwest and thousands around the world know of the school and its fine reputation for high-quality instruction and teaching materials.
