It’s never too early to start your 2022 sailing and boating season preparation! Whether you’re a beginner wanting to get a head start learning about keelboats, a boater wanting to learn about safety, or a veteran looking to brush up on your sailing foundations, our onshore classes and classroom clinics can help you prepare for this spring, summer, and fall sailing season! Master your knot tying, brush up your safety and navigation, or start learning how to sail!

 

Beginner Keelboat | Winter Prep/Spring Practical Track

You don’t have to wait for spring to get a head start on learning how to sail. Launch your sailing career today. Start your learning how to sail in the classroom before you get out on one of our Sonars in the spring. Classroom learning is a good way to lay the keystone foundation of your sailing career. Our Beginner Keelboat class will start in the classroom now, but move to on water in the spring for some hands-on experience!

This program consists of four 4-Hour sessions, two classroom-based sessions in the winter at The WaterFront Center, and two on-water sessions in the spring on a Sonar with a certified instructor.

You can opt to take the US Sailing Basic Keelboat Certification. If you opt to add the US Sailing Basic Keelboat Certification, the US Sailing Keelboat book, official logbook, and a 1-year membership to US Sailing will be included for an additional fee. It is expected that you read the US Sailing Keelboat book before coming to class, as we will refer to the book throughout the class.

$600 +tax, includes two 4-hr classroom sessions and two 4-hr on-water practicals, boat reservation, and one sailor for the entire course. $50 +tax, for the additional US Sailing Basic Keelboat Certification exam and materials

16 hours total instructional time = 4hr sessions spread over four days (two classroom courses and two on-water practicals.) Both Winter Classes will be scheduled upon purchase; please consult an instructor before booking follow-up practical classes.


NYS Boating Safety Certification Course

Get ready for this boating season with our Boating Safety Certification Course. This course covers basic seamanship, navigation, rules of the road, boating safety, and boating laws pertaining to New York State. This boating safety course will satisfy the requirements for boaters under "Brianna's Law". 

Under "Brianna's Law," New York State requires all motorboat operators, regardless of age will need a boating safety certificate beginning in 2025. Please check the NYS website if you were born after January 1st, 1978, as you may be required to have a boating safety certificate before 2025. $50+tax for a printed textbook, enrollment in this one-day course, and a NYS Boating Safety Certification Card upon successful completion.


Celestial Navigation

Enrich your sailing experience and learn how to determine your position with Celestial Navigation, a fundamental pillar of the maritime tradition before GPS and satellite navigation.

This course teaches the Sight Reduction method of celestial navigation, covering how to determine your position at sea from timed sextant sights of the celestial bodies. Learn to operate a sextant and incorporate the sight reduction method into offshore navigation while implementing concepts such as dip factor, universal time, assumed latitude, instrument error, etc. Take the concepts you learned in class to the real world and travel to the south shore for a sight taking session where you will learn how to complete a universal plotting sheet!

This course includes a pad of sight reduction forms, a copy of the 2022 Nautical Almanac, several Universal Plotting sheets, and extra writing materials. 

Course Fee: $250 +tax for an 8-hour classroom session and a 3-hour sight-taking session for one participant; also includes a pad of sight reduction forms, a copy of the 2022 Nautical Almanac, several Universal Plotting sheets, and extra writing materials. Optional certification test available.

Classroom Sailing Clinics | 90 Minute Instructional Seminars

To be adept at sailing means to become a well-rounded sailor. Beginners can learn the fundamentals of sailing, while veterans can test their knowledge and mastery of the subject! These classes will cover various introductory and specialized topics that should be in every sailor's arsenal of knowledge!

Introduction to Sailing | $25 +tax

Delve into the world of sailing and learn what it really means to become a sailor. Explore every part of what goes into sailing from rigging

Basic Sail Trim Clinic | $25 +tax

An essential component to sailing is trimming your sail! Learn how to effectively trim your sail in any condition to move your sailboat efficiently. This course covers how to sail trim the art of setting sails in various situations, from cruising to racing.

Navigation Rules | $25 +tax

The water, just like the road has its own set of rules. Learn the basics of safe navigation, rules of the road, and ATON (aids to navigation) signals, markers and guidance equipment.

Knot Tying | $25 +tax

Master the seven essential knots every sailor should know recommended by US Sailing. Learn the differences between knots, when to use them, and why.

Shannon Kelly

Shannon grew up in Oyster Bay and received a Bachelor of Arts in English with a concentration in creative writing from Binghamton University in 2019. She has been working for The Waterfront Center for 6 years in various positions from Educator to Communications Coordinator. During her time at The WaterFront Center, she has taught over 500 children of all ages from various school around Long Island and New York City about marine, environmental, and biological sciences. When she was younger she loved going sailing with her father and has continued her education in sailing here with us at The Waterfront Center. Her passions include reading, writing, filming, being on the water, and rugby.
