About Us
The WaterFront Center (WFC) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization located in Oyster Bay, New York. We provide access to the waters of Oyster Bay Harbor and Long Island Sound through our marine education programs, recreational and instructional sailing programs, paddleboard, kayak, and sailboat rentals, and through harbor tours aboard our National Historic Landmark oyster sloop CHRISTEEN. Our junior fleet consists of new c420s, Optimists, new Sonars, Hobie Waves, Hobie Getaways, and a J105.

Job Description

Position Responsibilities and Duties:
Manage and maintain all on-water program infrastructure, including powerboats, sailboats, kayaks, paddleboards, and dock infrastructure.
Work closely with and often at the direction of the Sailing Director to support the WFC’s extensive sailing activities.
Work closely with, and often at the direction of, the Education Director in support of paddle-related education programming.
Hire, train, and manage dock staff who will interact with customers for paddle and sailboat rentals and programs.
Hire, train, and manage launch drivers.
Drive launch and assist with rentals as needed.
Responsible for the oversight and safety of paddling and sailing participants.
Manage the boatyard and storage yard, keeping them clean and well organized.
Maintain all power boat assets.
Perform maintenance on moorings and oversee their removal and placement.
Maintain the dock infrastructure and perform maintenance as needed to ensure a safe environment.
Maintain WFC-owned vehicles.
Maintain up-to-date use, deficiency, and maintenance logs for all waterfront assets.

Requirements
Attend all special events (Benefits, Regattas, Oyster Festival, etc.).
Assist in the planning and organizing of special events.
Seasonal hours are demanding and expected. From May through September, a six-day workweek might be required.
The position is physically demanding, including lifting and moving small boats and kayaks.
The position reports to the Executive Director.
Driver’s license.
First Aid/CPR.
Ideal Candidate Possesses
Launch Tender or USCG Master Mariner License.
Experience in boat maintenance and fiberglass repair or eagerness to learn.
Experience in sailboat rigging.
US Sailing Basic Keelboat Certification.
US Sailing Safe Powerboating Certification.
Competence with Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, and software programs and apps in general
This is a full-time salaried position with winter flexibility. The salary range is $55,000-$65,000 and includes benefits such as, healthcare premium contribution, 401k match, and paid-time-off.

Overview: The WaterFront seeks qualified sailors to captain CHRISTEEN on all sails.
Qualifications: Must have a USCG Master license and Sail Endorsement. This is a part-time hourly position.

Front Desk - Customer Service Representative
Overview:
We are currently seeking qualified customer service representatives to join our team. Candidates must be able to multi-task and handle a constant influx of customers both in-person and on the phone. Responsibilities include answering multiple phone lines, taking registrations online, and handling walk-in customers. Candidate must be self-motivated and flexible, with some business experience a plus. A positive attitude and outgoing personality are a must. Candidates must be willing to learn to grow within a small business environment.
Position is part-time, ideally starting in May and lasting into September. Hours may increase depending on skill and interest. Employment may include evening, weekends, and certain holidays. Prior to hiring, candidates will be subject to an in-person interview, background and reference check.

Sailing Instructor
Overview
The WFC is looking to hire full-time sailing race coaches and instructors for our 2023 spring, summer, and fall programs. We are looking for Race Coaches for our Opti Green fleet, Opti RWB fleet, c420 fleet, and J105 Jr. Big Boat program. Sessions run from the middle of March through the end of October and range from beginning sailing to racing. Positions available for any one season or combination thereof.

Sailing instructors for our 2023 spring, summer, and fall programs.
Race Coaches for our Opti Green fleet, Opti RWB fleet, c420 fleet, and J105 Jr. Big Boat program
Responsibilities:
Instruction in our youth summer program (weekend regattas if you are a Race Coach)
Race Coaches will be only working with our race teams.
Occasional help in our adult programs, when needed.
Ensuring a safe, organized, and educational waterfront and fleet.
Necessary seamanship skills (upkeep of boats, equipment, and facilities).
Help prepare and plan activities, chalk talks, etc., each day.
Any other responsibilities that are considered necessary to meet the goals of The WaterFront Center.
Qualifications:
Self-motivated team player.
Must be at least 16 years old.
Must hold US Sailing Level 1 certification or International equivalent
Strong background and experience in sailing.
Previous experiences in instructing/coaching sailing and a commitment to teaching are preferred.
Ability to be in an active, outdoor environment in a variety of weather conditions.
Must hold current CPR/First Aid certifications

Positions Available
Outdoor Educator
Overview
WFC is looking to hire outdoor educators for seasonal and part-time positions. The educators will be responsible for teaching hands-on lessons on marine ecology/biology to grades K-12, developing and maintaining teaching resources, participating in staff training and meetings, and contributing ideas for program development. The applicants should have knowledge of ecological concepts, marine biology, and natural history, along with experience or passion in education in an outdoor setting.
**Available Positions**
Spring- Part time April-June (Few hours a day depending on school schedule) * Great for substitute teachers, retired teachers and students who are currently taking science or teaching college level classes.
Summer Position - M-F 8:30-4:30 Contracted position. Weekend hours are available for more $$
Summer Evening/Weekend Educator - Evening Marine Touch Tank, Kayaking programs, Weekend Touch Tanks
Responsibilities:
Teach hands-on, indoor/outdoor, marine ecology/biology – lessons to grades K-12 for one day and multi day programs.
Work independently and with staff to develop and maintain teaching resources.
Participate in staff training and staff meetings to plan and evaluate programs.
Participate in other program-related events and functions.
Contribute ideas for continual development of programs and to strengthen our teaching team.
Take part in routine tasks of aquarium work, helping other staff members within the organization, cleaning and upkeep of program spaces and classrooms.
Demonstrate responsible and safe decision-making skills.
Qualifications:
Knowledge of ecological concepts, marine biology and natural history (degree in or working towards related field preferred)
Motivation to work with children in a high energy, outdoor setting.
Experiential education experience with youth, preferably in an outdoor setting.
Current Standard First Aid and CPR preferred.
Ability to be in an active, outdoor environment, in a variety of weather conditions.

Positions Available
Dock Staff
Overview
WFC is looking to hire Dock Staff for seasonal and part-time positions. Dock staff will manage all kayak and stand-up paddle rentals from our dock. They will help move the kayaks into the water and help customers into and out of their vessels. Applicants should be attentive to customers, be able to lift at least 50lbs comfortably, be comfortable around and on the water, and a self starter!
**Available Positions**
June - October: Positions available Monday - Sunday 8:30 am - 8:00 pm, contracted position.
Responsibilities:
Loading clients into and out of kayaks and SUPs and any other vessel who may need help
Moving Kayaks. SUP'‘s and other vessels
Helping all sailboats come into the dock
Greeting customers on the dock and guiding them to the correct location
Keeping the dock clean and orderly
Qualifications:
Current Standard First Aid and CPR preferred (during training week, we will hold CPR/First Aid training)
Professional appearance and attitude
Good radio etiquette
Must be able to take direction and be attentive to customers
