A Look Back on 2021 Youth Summer Sailing
We’re looking forward to seeing our youth sailors on the water now that the days are slowly thawing. Check out some of our best memories from the 2021 youth summer sailing season! Who do you recognize!?
Optimist Sailors
Young children ages 8 to12 made up our Opti Sailors. The Opti is a small, single-handed dinghy about 7.5 feet long that looks like a bathtub. It is one of the simplest sailing boats, consisting of the mainsail, sprit pole, boom, rudder, tiller, daggerboard, and airbags for buoyancy. Our Opti programs range from beginner to race team!
C420 Sailors
The Club 420 (c420) is a 4.2-meter (around 14-foot) long dinghy designed for double-handed sailing. The C420, designed to be even simpler than international racing versions, has a reinforced hull and untapered mast. In addition, the rigging varies according to the sail shape. It consists of the mainsail, the jib, the rudder, the tiller, boom, vang, outhaul, spinnaker, trapeze, and cunningham lines (extensions that help control the sail). This sailboat is for older children 13 and up! Start your child in C420 Beginner, and they can work their way up to the race team!
Adventure Sailing
Sailing catamarans consist of two parallel hulls connected by a trampoline, with a sail in the middle. One of the more stable boats can be sailed easily in light winds and is difficult to capsize. Many warm-water resorts will rent catamarans to people with little or no sailing experience since catamarans are generally easier to maneuver. We offer two types of catamarans at The WaterFront Center: Hobie Wave and Hobie Getaway! Children with little to no sailing experience can have fun exploring Oyster Bay Harbor with their group of friends!
