Week 1 Junior Summer Program

The Junior Summer Programs of Summer 2023 have started with a splash! Campers have begun to see the beauty of Oyster Bay’s wildlife and understand the techniques of Sailing.

For the first week, the Bay Buccaneers (Grade 1 and 2) learned a lot about the ecosystem of Oyster Bay. They did activities like catching pipe fish, killifish, baby blue claw crabs, and eels. They also used the dredge on CHRISTEEN to catch slipper snails, baby spider crabs, and clams.

Our Sound Swashbucklers (Gr 3 & 4) learned about the difference in water density and performed the egg in a Cup test. This experiment demonstrated that salt water has a higher density than Freshwater, causing the egg to float in saltwater.

First Mates (Gr 5 & 6) learned about different types of volcanoes and even created ones of their own which they set off using vinegar and baking soda. Skippers (Grades 7 – 10) enjoyed the scenery of Oyster Bay Harbor by kayaking to crab island to find crabs and rocks. After exploring, they reminisced on their travels and learned about life underwater by painting rocks they encountered.

Opti Beginners (Ages 8 - 12) learned how to steer their own Opti’s early in the week and capped off the week by learning how to sail upwind.

Opti Race Team (Ages 10- 15) jumped back into racing shape this week by practicing their roll tacks, gibes, and race starts.

c420 Beginners (Ages 13-18) learned how to rig and de-rig their boats on the dock to sail up and downwind.

c420 Intro To Race: (Ages 13 - 18) discussed how to improve their techniques this week, then put those plans into motion by practicing roll tacks, gybes, and rounding marks.

c420 Race Team (Ages 13-18) started the week by learning and practicing how to fly their spinnaker and working on their roll tacks and gybes. They finished the week prepping for the Western Districts Regatta Thursday by refreshing up on racecourses and starts.

UPDATE: Our c420 Race Team placed 3rd in the Western District Regatta, qualifying them for JSA LIS (junior sailing association Long Island Sound) c420 Championship Regatta!

Adventure Sailing (Ages 8 - 17) reviewed important sailing terminology like boat parts, lines, and how to use the wind clock before they took the hobies out into the bay to put their new knowledge to the test!

Week 1 of JSP was fantastic! We can’t wait to see what the following weeks bring us here at The WaterFront Center.
