Week 2 Junior Summer Program

With all hands on deck for another great week of JSP, we took a short week and made it awesome! This week, our Marine explorers focused on the second ocean principle, "How the Oceans Affect the Earth: Different materials and geochemical cycles on Earth originate in the Ocean."

The Bay Buccaneers (Gr 1 & 2) learned about the different types of fossils! Then they created fossils by pressing shells in clay.

Sound Swashbucklers (Gr 3 & 4) learned about rocks, fossils, and Pangea! They also learned about teamwork and the Oyster Bay wildlife while paddling the "Mothership," our 17ft stand-up paddle board.

First Mates (Gr 5 & 6) explored the rock cycle and the different types of rocks in Oyster Bay. They also made conductive playdough, discovering different ways to connect a circuit.

Skippers (Grades 7 – 10)  learned the rock cycle and about different types of rocks like spherical, terrigenous, and Biogenous. The skippers set up their fish tank this week and enjoyed putting the animals they caught seining and crabbing in it.

Opti Beginners (Ages 8 - 12) This week, Opti Beginners practiced taking control of their vessel by sailing long up and downwind courses, making them more comfortable in the boats.

Opti Intro to Race (Ages 8 - 15) Focused on their boat handling techniques. They learned sail trim, tell tales, and knot-tying skills. They also did some racing with our Opti Race Team to get a feel for race starts.

Opti Race Team (Ages 10- 15) This week focused on high-level race tactics and start sequences. They practiced navigating to puffs, recognized lifts and headers, determined favored parts of the racecourse, and helped raise flags during our Sears Cup Qualifier.

c420 Beginners (Ages 13-18) Became comfortable with the c420s and began to test their techniques by introducing race starts.

c420 Intro: (Ages 13 - 18) learned the basics of racing, progressed into higher-level racing techniques, and sailed practice regattas throughout the week.

c420 Race Team (Ages 13-18) spent the week working on their roll tacks, roll gybes, and starts. They also spent part of the week preparing for the Sears Cup Area B Qualifier that The WaterFront Center hosted.

Adventure Sailing (Ages 8 - 17) practiced capsizing drills, sailed around the mooring field in the Hobies, and learned about tacking upwind and trimming. They had fun sailing out into the bay on Friday and then cooled off in the water.

Week 2 of JSP was incredible! We can't wait to see what the following weeks bring us here at The WaterFront Center.
