Week 7 Youth Summer
The second to last week of camp went by so fast! Our Sound Swashbucklers (Gr 3 & 4) turned into pirates and kayaked over to the salt marsh where they learned about mussels and how the marsh acts as a natural filter for the bay! The Bay Buccaneers (Gr k-2) sailed on Christeen and had a great conversation with her captain. Captain Steve shared what it means to be a captain aboard a big ship before each sailor had a turn as captain themselves! First Mates (Gr 5 & 6) learned about natural resources and how complex the food web can really get. Afterward, they played a game of “Oh Eel” to show how the food web and natural resources play off each other in the wild.
The Opti Beginners (Ages 8 –12) all showed up with smiles this week! They learned how to sail and worked on what it means to be "in irons" when sailing and the best way to get out of it. Our Adventure Sailing kids learned about points of sail and how to identify on the water where the wind is coming from! The Opti Intermediate sailors (Ages 8 – 12) worked on their tiller maneuvers and practiced doing figure eights between two marks. Our C420 Beginner group (12 - 17) worked on their boat positioning as well. They watched for their feet and back positions while they sailed and as they tacked and gybed. Lastly, our C420 race team was busy working on their trapezes.
