Taking Classes in The Winter = More Sailing In The Summer!

Learning how to sail is more popular than ever before and people already are looking to book lessons this summer. Get ahead of the crowds and take advantage of the cold weather by taking the classroom portion of the Basic Keelboat course this winter. Accelerate your progress as a sailor in the colder months and get the most sail time out of the summer season. Book your “Beginner Keelboat - Winter Prep/Spring Practical Track” to build your foundational knowledge during the winter and maximize your time on the water when the weather warms up!

Becoming a sailor requires patience and confidence. These attributes do not come all at once but are gained by having a solid foundation of sailing knowledge. It's essential to get a handle on the fundamentals of sailing in order to become a successful sailor.

Learning the basics in the classroom will give you ample time to practice on land in a controlled setting. Building confidence starts with a solid understanding of sailing terminology, knots, safety, and points of sail.

It's a good idea to get familiar with your sailing lexicon before you hop in the boat! Taking the classroom component of our Basic Keelboat course during the colder months provides an excellent environment and ample time to learn the terminology and idioms.

By laying your knowledge foundations in winter, you will be quicker and more confident to act during your spring practicals! For example, when your instructor calls the jib to port, you will know to move the front most to the left side. If you weren’t sure what “jib to port” mean, or why a situation would call for that, then you should enroll in our winter classes!

Knots are a crucial skill essential to safely and efficiently handling a boat. Correctly selecting and quickly tying the right knot for the situation can prevent dangerous situations that could knock you right out of your boat. Our instructors will teach you how to tie knots before getting on the water and help you determine what knot is best for a jib sheet or what way to secure a halyard.

Safe boating is happy boating at The WaterFront Center where safety is a core component of our Basic Keelboat course. During the classroom component, your experienced sailing instructor will run through the different preventative safety measures that sailors take to prevent dangerous situations even before they get on the boat. During the Spring, instructors will guide you through “man-overboard” drills and test your knowledge of “right of way. With the knowledge you gained during your winter classes, you can more confidently tackle their situations.
