Week 7 of Junior Summer Program

Junior Summer Program Week 7 was a blast! Marine Explorers dove into Oyster Bay Harbor and explored the Week 7 Principle: Into the Abyss, understanding a dive deep into the Ocean’s unexplored regions.

Bay Buccaneers: (Grade 1 & 2): This week, Bay Bucs's Learned about turtles, nudibranchs, and horseshoe crabs! After these lessons, Bay Bucs made crafts of all three animals and met our horseshoe crabs in the touch tank and our red-eared slider, Lightning.

Sound Swash (Grades 3 & 4): Explored buoyancy and how different sea vessels, such as submarines, experience buoyancy compared to a sailboat. They also studied electrical circuits and created their own with conductive Play-Doh.

First Mates (Grade 5 & 6): This week, the group learned about volcanoes and Earth's different layers. First, Mates experimented with baking soda, vinegar, and dish soap and the shape of their volcano to see who could make the largest explosion. They also created mandalas in the sand using items they found on the beach.

Skippers (Grades 7 - 10): Learned about Earth's formation, layers, and volcanoes. They experimented with making their volcano from clay, testing different shapes and methods.

Opti Beginner (Ages 8 - 12): Took to a windy week in Oyster Bay Harbor and worked on sailing upwind, sailed a windward-leeward course, reach-to-reach course, and learned to rig and sail Sonars.

Opti Intro (Ages 8 - 13): They perfected their tacking and gybing skills this week. Sailors took pride in mastering basic skills to better themselves and develop muscle memory.

Opti Race (Ages 8 – 15): They worked on their technical skills this week. Sailors worked on roll tacks, gybes, tel tails, mark rounding, and pointing.

c420 Intro (Ages 13 – 18): Became comfortable sailing in high wind and learned to race a regatta. Sailors also learned many advanced sail techniques like roll tacks and using their tell tales.

c420 Beginner (Ages 13 - 18): Learned the basics of sailing and became more comfortable sailing in windy conditions while aboard a Sonar.

c420 Race (Ages 13 - 18): Focused on racing fundamentals, including the trapeze, spinnaker, starts, and mark rounding.

Adventure Sailing (Ages 8 - 17): Sailed in hobbies and sonars this week, learning to sail upwind in windier conditions. Sailors adventured to the Bayville bridge and took turns steering the tiller.

Liam Drennan

Liam grew up in Oyster Bay and received a Bachelor of Science in Marketing from Hartwick College in 2023. Growing up in Oyster Bay he spent much of his time enjoying the bay via sailboat and fishing the waters.

Liam currently acts as The WaterFront Center’s Marketing Assistant and plans to provide our Sailors and Explorers with quality content to show off the wonderful work of The WaterFront Center.
