What Does Your Child Do At Our Summer Science Program!
It’s your child's first time at our science program and you're wondering what they are going to be doing? Well, we’re not going to keep it a secret. Look at all the science fun your children can have this spring and summer!
Outdoor Wildlife Activities
Seining, Sniggling, Marsh Scavenger Hunt
Let your child explore wildlife and become a biologist at The WaterFront Center! Our science programs will take your child to the beach for some fun wildlife exploration, where they will learn how to sniggle, seine, and even explore the marsh with a scavenger hunt! Seining is an activity where children handle a 6-10ft net to catch fish and other sea creatures for examination. Sniggling is a fan-favorite activity where children catch eels with a net while their partner uncovers them from under rocks in a freshwater stream. In these activities, children learn about the local marine life in Oyster Bay as they learn the correct way to handle and identify different marine animals! After catching a few specimens, they will learn about the similarities and differences between all of the creatures, including fish, crabs, snails, and mollusks.
STEM Activities
Windmill, Sail Cars, Float-Your-Boat
STEM is an acronym for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math. Your child will learn how to implement STEM principles in everyday life, giving them the tools they can use to succeed in the future. In our STEM activities, we provide students with materials to physically engineer their own solutions to everyday life problems. Children will continue to test and improve their project to develop their critical thinking skills while coming up with the best solutions.
Pollution and Sustainability
Pollution pond, Microplastics, Oil Spill
Pollution is a topic that we are passionate about at The WaterFront Center. We strive to teach people firsthand the effects of environmental and marine pollution. Your child will learn about the various way that pollution can enter the ecosystem and wash up on our beaches. We’ll also explore the nature of oil spills and innovative ways to clean them up. We’ll also investigate pollution on the consumer level: exploring what microplastics are; in what household items microplastics can be found; and how to avoid purchasing products that contribute to the problem. Children will participate in these hands-on activities while working together and using critical thinking to understand how pollutants cause and affect our planet.
Outdoor Animal Survival Games
Oh, Deer! Survivor, Park Ranger
Our activities are structured in order to take advantage of the surrounding environment, allowing your child to enjoy the outdoors for as long as possible (with plenty of hydration, of course!). Our instructors will play games, where the children can run around our field and exercise while learning! These games simulate how animals survive, what they need, and where they land on the food web. Disguising ecological concepts as play, children explore what happens when animals interact with each other in the food web, what important resources they need to stay alive, and which animals are the most likely to survive against others.
