2022 Spring Youth Programs Now Available!

Spring Has Sprung At The WaterFront Center!

Get your kids excited about warmer days with our Spring Science & Sailing Youth Programs! Whether your child enjoys science exploration, wants to learn how to sail, or both, we have a way to make their spring more exciting. This spring, get your children out on the water and onto the beach to discover the Oyster Bay National Wildlife Refuge!


Spring Break Science Week

While school is out, Spring Break Science Week is in session! Sign up your child for a week of science activities during April recess, keeping minds engaged through fun, STEM-based constructive learning.

Registration is available for children in grades 1st through 3rd. Each day, sign-up for a morning or afternoon session has a different science theme and activity. Activities included in the week are beach scavenger hunt, touch tank, seining, snail hunt, wind turbines, water experiments, and more!

Grades 1st - 3rd

Monday, April 18th through Friday, April 22nd.

  • Morning Sessions: Mon-Fri 9:30am - 12:30am = $165 +tax

  • Afternoon Session: Mon-Fri 1:00pm - 4:00pm = $165 +tax


Spring 2022 - High School Sailing (ages 12-18)

Returning sailors & experienced racers are welcome to join our afterschool c420 sailing program for weekday practice and to race in regattas.

Experienced racers are given the opportunity to extend their competitive season with the encouragement of their peers. Race in regattas representing your high school or join the WFC’s composite team to participate in regattas around Long Island.

  • Week Day Practices - 3:30pm-6:00pm

    • 2 Practices per week (Tues & Thurs Only) - $275 +tax

    • 3 Practices per week (Tues, Wed, & Thurs) - $350 +tax

  • Fleet Race Fridays

    • $25+tax /boat, $35+tax /boat if not part of the program

  • Regattas

    • $60+tax /boat, $75+tax /boat if not part of the program 

**Returning or Experienced Sailors Only** those new to sailing are encouraged to join one of our "Intro to c420 racing" classes during our summer programs. Enrolled sailors need to be reviewed based on their skill level and boating experience. If you are unsure of your experience level, you may contact sailing@thewaterfrontcenter.org to evaluate your candidacy for the High School Sailing Program. Registrations will not be finalized until approved by the Sailing Director/Head Coach. Refunds will be issued if the sailor can not be reassigned to a proper skill level class.


Spring 2022 - After School Opti Sailing

The Opti is designed for a variety of skill levels to teach the foundations of safety, seamanship, & sportsmanship.

Opti Beginner (ages 8 - 15) - $355+tax

This program is designed for children ages 8 to 15 who want to learn to sail and are ready to set the foundations of safety, seamanship, and sportsmanship. These sailors have 0 to very little experience. Variety, fun, and skill-building are the core of the curriculum as well as capsize recovery and prevention. Games, both on and off the water, and boating vocabulary are important parts of this class.

  • Sundays (5 weeks): 9am - 12pm | April 24, May 1, May 8, May 15, May 22

Opti: Intro to Racing (experience required) - $355+tax

Opti - Intro To Racing is for sailors who have successfully passed Opti Beginner and are ready to move to the world of racing and is an introduction to our race team program. Opti - Intro To Racing sailors focusing on increasing their skills in the boat, in order to prep themselves for future Green Fleet regattas or to keep their skills in check before summer starts.

Sundays (5 weeks): 1pm - 4pm | April 24, May 1, May 8, May 15, May 22

**Returning or Experienced Sailors Only** Must have successfully passed Opti Beginner AND get Sailing Director’s approval. Enrolled sailors need to be reviewed based on their skill level and boating experience. Registrations will not be finalized until approved by the Sailing Director/Head Coach. Opti Race Team (experience required) - $440+tax

After going through an Opti - Intro To Racing program and competing as a Green Fleet sailor in a full season of regattas, sailors then move to Opti Race Team. Opti Race Team sailors focus on increasing their skills in the boat, in order to prep themselves for future regattas or to keep their skills in check before summer starts.

  • Sundays (7 weeks): 1pm - 4pm | April 3, April 10, April 17, April 24, May 1, May 8, May 15

  • Mondays (7 weeks): 3:30pm - 6:00pm | April 4, April 11, April 18, April 25, May 2, May 9, May 16

**Returning or Experienced Sailors Only** Must have successfully passed Opti: Intro to Racing AND get Sailing Director’s approval. Enrolled sailors need to be reviewed based on their skill level and boating experience. Registrations will not be finalized until approved by the Sailing Director/Head Coach. Spring 2022 - Jr. Big Boat Race Team (ages 12-18)

Learn to race on one of our J/105s, a proven blue-water racer, that is the most successful one-design keelboat class in the world. Our top coaches will take your child's competitive sailing to the next level. The J/105 is the most prolific one-design keelboat class over 30' in the USA, with over 680 boats sailing worldwide.

Per Session Pricing: $50+tax per practice or race

Season Pricing: $800+tax for 8 weeks (includes regatta fees)

Days/Times:

  • Monday 3:30pm-6:30pm

  • Friday 3:30pm-6:30pm

  • Wednesday Night Races

Schedule: 8 Weeks, May 2nd - June 24th

Shannon Kelly

Shannon grew up in Oyster Bay and received a Bachelor of Arts in English with a concentration in creative writing from Binghamton University in 2019. She has been working for The Waterfront Center for 6 years in various positions from Educator to Communications Coordinator. During her time at The WaterFront Center, she has taught over 500 children of all ages from various school around Long Island and New York City about marine, environmental, and biological sciences. When she was younger she loved going sailing with her father and has continued her education in sailing here with us at The Waterfront Center. Her passions include reading, writing, filming, being on the water, and rugby.
