This week we have another new set of classes we hope you enjoy!

"Science From Home" 30 minute activities that you can do at your kitchen table cover topics in STEM, Sailing, Marine Education and much more!

Saltwater Density  

Monday May 18th @ 1:30pm – 2:00pm & 4:30pm – 5:00pm 

The dead sea is famous for people's ability to be able to easily float on top, but do you know why it's so easy? It's all because of salt. With this easy science experiment, we can explore the density of saltwater and even create some saltwater layer magic! 

WFC Naturalist:  Shannon Kelly will guide you during this interactive lesson. You’ll have the opportunity to ask questions. 

Materials: Please have necessary materials ready prior to the lesson 

  • Water 

  • Salt 

  • Different colored markers or food dye 

  • 3 small cups  

  • 1 Larger clear cup (so that you can see the different salt layers) 

  • Measuring cup  

  • Something to stir with 

  • Towel 

Preparation: Gather materials and lay down a towel at your station. Fill three cups 1/3 of the way with water.  

Age Range: Elementary/Middle School; Students (K-2nd grade should have a parent present in the background)

Biomimicry 

Wednesday May 20th @ 1:30pm – 2:00pm  

Did you know that a lot of our best inventions are modeled after animals and things found in nature? Come learn what biomimicry is with us and then invent your own biomimicry invention! 

WFC Naturalist:  Sarah Hall will guide you during this interactive lesson. You’ll have the opportunity to ask questions.

  • Pencils 

  • Markers, crayons, or color pencils

Creature Feature: Crabs 

Friday May 22nd @ 1:30pm – 2:00pm & 4:30 – 5:00pm 

Crustaceans have been around for over 56 million years. Join us in showing you live local crabs from around Oyster Bay! Did you know there are requirements for being a crab? Come Zoom with us live to find out. After we’ll even help you construct your own crab!

Ranger Molly’s Butterflies & Moths 

Wednesday May 20th @ 7:00pm – 7:30pm  

Saturday May 23rd @ 2:30pm – 3:00pm & 7:00pm – 7:30pm  

Join Ranger Molly as she asks you to find the differences between bugs and other insects and compare butterflies with moths. View live butterflies, moths and other insects.
