Newly Installed Real-Time Weather Station at The WaterFront Center

Tired of inaccurate wind reports before you go sailing? Ever wonder "What's the weather like at The WaterFront Center?" Now you can get real-time weather readings and more accurate forecasts thanks to our newly installed Tempest Weather Station by WeatherFlow!

One of the questions we are most frequently asked is "what's the weather like at The WaterFront Center?" or "How's the wind looking?" Weather is an essential aspect of our organization as about 80% of our programs take place outside! Most weather apps and stations have a general reading of what the weather will be like in the region. Still, the weather can change too fast for those systems to track or weather stations are spaced far apart to give an accurate reading of a specific area.

Our Executive Director, George Ellis, wanted to find a modern weather monitoring solution that could benefit not only our staff and customers but any fellow sailors or outdoor enthusiasts in the area! His search led him to the Tempest Weather Station by WeatherFlow, which is now installed and transmitting data at The WaterFront Center.

The Tempest Weather Station takes real-time data from its sensors (right outside our building). The station transfers the data back to our facility, where its Wi-Fi base station is located. It immediately transmits the weather data to the WeatherFlow website and app so that people can pull up and see it on their own devices. The data shows you everything, including temperature, predicted 7-day forecast, humidity, UV, dew point, sea level pressure, lightning detection, wind speed, rain in inches, air density, and more!

Not only does the Tempest provide weather readings specific to our location, but it also incorporates our data with data from other personal weather systems and relevant publically available weather data from satellites, aircraft, and radar systems. WeatherFlow's Real-Time Data Analysis systems combine all this aggregate data analytics to provide a detailed baseline regional forecast. WeatherFlow then applies powerful machine learning technology (WeatherFlow AI) to provide a more accurate and personalized model for our specific area!

Simply put, our Tempest station helps create better forecasts for the region and in return, we receive more accurate forecasts for our little corner of Oyster Bay Harbor! Our station also shows up on all your favorite weather apps as well! Here are some live weather graphs and readings from SailFlow!

Our WaterFront Coordinator, John Brendel, recently installed our new weather station about 500 feet in front of our building on a light post next to the Bay. One of the best things about the Tempest station runs on solar power; once you set it up, you never have to take it down to charge it or replace a battery.

Another important aspect about the Tempest station that we love is that there are no moving parts on the station. You do not need to worry about hurting an animal that might fly by. We're glad that this solution is technologically advanced while also still mindful of its environmental impacts in terms of energy consumption and disturbance to our ecosystem.

Our organization is excited to have a real-time weather forecast for our direct area.
