Here at the WFC, we don’t wait until summer for marine science and sailing fun. With year-round marine education programs and three season sailing programs, we’re always working to engage youth in the marine environment, no matter the season. This year, the WFC is pleased to offer even more ways to get outside and learn about (and play!) in the bay with our expanded after-school program offerings. Beginner and novice sailors are invited to join our popular Opti Basics program, now offered twice a week on Mondays and Saturdays. For those with a little more experience and an interest in racing, Fridays are the day to play. With over twenty Optis participating in fall 2015 After-School Opti Program (now called Opti Intermediate & Racing), spring Fridays promise lots of small boat action- a great way to gear up for summer racing. Sailors from WFC summer programs as well as neighboring yacht club programs pack the dock and fill West Harbor for great drills, games and fun racing. For older sailors, there is High School Sailing. With a full travel regatta schedule and coaching for all skill levels of sailors in grades 7-12, HSS is sure better than homework and studying for the SATs – and, participation in sports has been shown to help students with their academics! New this spring is After-School Adventure Sailing. The name says it all – sailors of all skill levels in grades 6-12 will embark on various adventures on Sonars, from learning the basics of rigging and safety on-board, to navigating to neighboring harbors and coves. We’ve also expanded our newly launched After-School S.T.E.A.M. program for grades 5-8. On Wednesday afternoons, students will explore the power of wind and the properties of water, with on-shore learning complemented through sailing on Sonars. On Thursdays, students will explore topics of oceanography and marine biology, conducting experiences, field studies and engaging with the creatures of Oyster Bay. Whether it is capsizing an Opti for the first time, competing at a high school championship, catching plankton off the dock to study under a microscope, making your own fishing pole, building wind turbines or reefing a mainsail, afternoons will be a bustling time at the WFC. Come join the fun and help us spread the word!
