Shipboard Marine Science - Middle School and High School PDF Print E-mail
Board the historic oyster sloop Christeen for an exciting sailing experience and hands-on educational marine science activities designed for school groups, camps, scouts and other organizations. During a 3-hour sail aboard this floating classroom, up to 24 participants relive the past by hauling the sails, navigating with a compass, nautical chart and GPS, and setting and hauling oyster dredges.  In small groups, students also participate in learning stations by examining the day's catch from the dredge, otter trawl or touch tank, collecting and studying plankton under microscopes, and measuring water quality at surface and depth.  Throughout the sail, naturalists incorporate the history of the Long Island Sound, the oyster industry, and current environmental issues.
