The Oyster in Oyster Bay - 3rd to 5th Grade PDF Print E-mail
Students learn first hand why the earliest European explorers chose the name Oyster Bay for this special estuary habitat, and how people past and present depend upon the oyster – an important part of New York State’s and Long Island’s history. Students discover and describe basic life functions of the oyster, its adaptations, and its dependence upon their environment.  In teams, students dissect an oyster, identify external and internal anatomy parts, and construct descriptions of oyster shells. We also discuss human impact on oysters and how we can better protect this natural resource.  As part of this program, teachers are sent a twenty-minute video, The Oyster in Oyster Bay, to show students prior to their visit.  Program can be adapted to meet the needs of classroom curriculum.
* This program can also be scheduled in conjunction with a Shellfish Hatchery tour.
