The WaterFront Center of Oyster Bay, Long Island, New York: Sailing Lessons and Boating on the Long Island Sound

Mornings are spent on the water , sailing. Skippers is appropriate for new sailors, as well as those with experience. Sailors are grouped according to ability and prior experience and coached seperately on the water. Participants have the oportunity to sail in 8-foot Optimist prams,  Sunfish or Pixels and possibly keelboats. Emphasis is on seamanship, rigging and recreational sailing. Racing skills are introduced and utilized in fun regattas. A basic swim test is required.

Afternoons are spent exploring the unique estuary habitat of beautiful Oyster Bay. On Sailing trips aboard the historic oyster sloop Christeen, students become the working crew, by raising sails and learning to navigate and steer the boat. While on the Christeen, students also have the opportunity to fish, dredge for oysters and marine life, study plankton and perform water quality testing. Other activities include kayaking, snorkeling, beach activities with seine and dip nets, learning to use solar power and participating in fun costume theme days. For our senior group we have added a full-day adventure to Caumsett State Park in Lloyd's Neck.

Age Group:        Girls and boys entering grades 7, 8 and 9  (of all sailing abilities)
