The WaterFront Center of Oyster Bay, Long Island, New York: Sailing Lessons and Boating on the Long Island Sound

First Mates session 4 PDF Print E-mail

Send your child for an exciting program that combines marine discovery and learning to sail. Mornings are spent exploring the beach, marsh, and bay with seine and dip nets, sailing aboard the historic oyster sloop Christeen, setting crab pots and traps, hauling an oyster dredge and fishing. In addition, First Mates kayak, snorkel, learn seamanship and participate in cooperative challenges and silly costume theme days.

Students spend their afternoons learning to sail- becoming "captains of their own ships" in 8- foot Optimist Prams. While sailing, students are grouped according to their experience and ability, ranging from novices to advanced. A basic swim test is required.
